Historical significance of the area
Cusco was founded in the 12th Century by the first Inca Manco Capac, the Son of the Sun. Legend says that he was charged by Inti, the ancestral sun god to find the ‘navel’ of the earth: the spot where he could plunge a golden rod into the ground until it disappeared. This spot was Cusco. It was the seat of the Incan Empire until the Spanish sacked it in 1533. Prior to the Inca, the area was home to the Killke culture who left behind a temple, fortress and roads that were only discovered in March 2008. Cusco was declared the archaeological capital of the Americas in 1933, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, and the historical capital of Peru in 1993.
What is the weather like?
The average annual temperature is 15 Celsius (maximum 20 Celsius and minimum -2 C). The rainy season runs from November through March. It can get quite cold at night, nice and warm during the day and can rain at any time (especially during the wet season). It’s very important to have a good raincoat and sun screen is a must.
