Scientific Wrestling: Josh Barnett Interview 4/08/2007

I caught up with Josh Barnett MMA main event at the last clinic with Billy Scientific Wrestling Robinson. GONG Magazine in Japan asked me to interview him and this is the exclusive English version:

SW: How did Billy Robinson?

JB: I met Billy through the UWF-Snakepit. I heard about the gym through some friends (Gryphon think) and can not wait to try it. At the time only Oe-san and Miyata-san, where the only ones there, but Miyata-san told me all about Billy and should be sure to come when Billy is in While living in Japan, whenever I was in Tokyo, go to the UWF-Snakepit to train and Billy worked with me a lot. I trained there for training San lot of my fights with my OE-striking and Billy Miyata-San improving my wrestling skills.

SW: What was the first meeting like? What did you and talk?

JB: I do not what to expect but had a very high reputation from many people so I felt very strong about wanting to learn from him. The first thing was first and with an introduction I got to know Billy to get on the mat and wrestling! Taught many finer points of the double lock the wrist and the top of the night, I showed what I call "Billy the neck crank" and I trained and Miyata-san as we fought.

SW: Please explain capture his passion for Wrestling

JB: It is a root in the tree of the MMA. Catch went to Brazil with Mitsuo Maeda, formed the basis of the New Japan Pro Wrestling and shots after Japan through Gotch and Billy, and was an art based on the evidence of battle. It is aggressive and explosive and has a deep history in the world and was my first major exhibition of his presentation.

One of the reasons I got into MMA was because of Pro Wrestling. I always knew that professional wrestling was a sport of hard real men and that most people only knew the surface of professional wrestling. I hate to see something like catch, which used to be known and popular worldwide, is being ignored. Capture was here before and BJJ BJJ is not the end all, all presentations.

I bring the catch wrestling back to the forefront and center of attention again and I will do by beating my opponents.

SW: Who are your 3 most favorite catch as catch can wrestlers of all time?

JB: Karl Gotch and Billy Robinson to make the catch to Japan and the creation of people who would revolutionize the professional wrestling / MMA. Ad Santel to declare war against the best judoka and wrestlers showing the catches were of the strongest fighters in the world.

SW: What do you think of the current status of catches and what can be done to improve it?

JB: Some people say that the capture or death is an esoteric art, while I do not think that comes to mind is to make its presence. Are some people like me and Megumi Fujii, to name a few who are actively competing, but unfortunately there are not enough of us out there. Competition is the only way to promote art and increase awareness.

I believe that the capture would be much better to bring fans to MMA fighters as well. I see many top amateur fighters will BJJ gyms because that's what I think must be trained to learn submission. Most times however, instructors train BJJ fighters in ways that are counterproductive to the fighters' abilities and strengths. Everyone needs a game outside back, but not everyone has to use a set of guard as a BJJ player.

With assets out there competing in MMA and Submission Wrestling is the catch is the only way to disseminate art. And the winners there will using catch the person not to have heard about capture the decision going to a gym and learn to fight and not sit at the ends.

SW: How to connect with Erik Paulson as his coach?

JB: I met Erik For many years one of its workshops in Seattle. Since then I've always had great respect for their knowledge and training techniques. I used to watch their videos instruction and wanted to learn more about their techniques. In 2004 I was in Seattle, but I could not get the training I felt I needed to be on top as well I decided to train with him in Los Angeles. When it was time again to be ready for the GP, I knew that Erik and LA's what he needed to win.

Erik is an amazing coach and a walking encyclopedia of knowledge. It was a great inspiration and help to my career. It is also one of the funniest people I have known!

SW: What is your opinion on the recent acquisition of pride in the Fertitta?

JB: Actually, it is too early to say but the loss of PRIDE rules, judging and our ability to wear shoes or Dogis is a tragic loss for MMA. I am very upset and wish people did not try to marginalize our ability to fight and perform in the ring / cage. It's really worrying that 90% of the time these rules and regulations come from people who never fought.

SW: What are your short-term plans for mixed martial arts career?

JB: Become the number one. If you are not trying to be the best to do that. It can never become the best, but try never know.

SW: What do you see yourself doing in twenty years?

JB: Running my own successful dojo and the promotion and hopefully enjoying my car!

SW: When are you going to do for wrestling again? Would you consider working with WWE?

JB: Maybe. It's a big stage and would be a good idea to use to show what I believe is professional wrestling, but is actually Hard to say at this point. I loved working in New Japan and one of my real passions would make a new type of UWF.

I'm not always removed from the professional wrestling and will be in the ring again I promise.

SW: What do you think of sitting next influential style professional wrestling with Antonio Inoki?

Muhammad Ali vs. vs. vs. Sonnen Paku Acram Peru one (Great Gama Family)

JB: I think against Inoki Ali was a historic up which helped the popularity of professional wrestling is a lot, but not much of a match, because the fighter could not really fight. The rules were too restrictive for Inoki and was in my opinion, hurt by them. If the party system was applied PRIDE, Inoki would have beaten Ali quickly and easily.

Inoki against Acram showed that just because you have the famous family name that does not mean they are as big as them. Acram party asked for a meeting he insisted they do it their way and Inoki said, "Well, we can fight any way you want.

Inoki had someone hit him behind the scenes in the face a couple of times and then left the ring and Inoki real damage in SAARC. In the end, Acram got more than he requested the Inoki broke his arm with a wristlock double.

SW: Have you been able to train with Antonio Inoki while fighting for New Japan Pro Wrestling?

JB: I have not been able to solve both Inoki-sama but he taught me some techniques and spent time talking to me. I've been very fortunate to have received many tips from Inoki-sama. Much of what I do in the professional wrestling is what Inoki-sama has tried to teach me, along with people like Miyata-san and Liger to name a few have taught me.

SW: What is the most impressive game in the repertoire of Inoki?

JB: Inoki versus Billy Robinson is the template for a game of professional wrestling and I think all aspiring wrestlers should watch to learn from it.

SW: Do you have a particularly interesting recall Inoki that stand out in your mind?

JB: Speaking of one-on-one with Inoki-sama before my match against Scott Norton in the Green Dome in Sapporo. Their support for me and talk about our beliefs in professional wrestling was a powerful moment for me.

SW: What do you think of Mr. Inoki's legacy be?

JB: Inoki-sama is an icon of professional wrestling and spokesperson for the truth of real wrestling, pro strong. I will always be grateful to Inoki-sama for the building of professional wrestling and MMA contributions. SW: What was the most interesting aspect of the seminar Billy Robinson's?

JB: It was a great seminar, and although I have trained with Billy in the past still learned many things. I brought Megumi Fujii Abeani, Erik Paulson, and Harry Smith to me also to learn. Everyone picked up many techniques of great Billy told us many stories the past of great wrestling as well.

We worked on all aspects of communications takedowns and even some physical training. I can not say much about all the techniques, but the finished DVD will be great.

I use the techniques you taught me every time I fight Billy.

JC: We have read that you can participate in ADCC 2007? What is the reason for the interest in ADCC if they are indeed part?

JB: I talked to the committee earlier this year, but because my schedule is so uncertain right now is too difficult for me to concentrate on only ADCC. Not this year for me, but I am bringing a women's team to compete with: Megumi Fujii, Hitomi Akano and Shannon Hooper.

SW: What is your impression of the fighters of this ADCC?

JB: Very much exploitation and play and not enough about the filing and withdrawal of the game. Most times, when he saw two good grapplers ADCC is boring with a lot of stagnation. A match between the top guys should be more exciting!

SW: How do you feel about art Roger Gracie ADCC?

JB: It's the champion right now so it must be good!

SW: What do you think now that UFC and PRIDE could unite standards (eg, lack of football will disappear, Elbow strikes will increase, etc.)

JB: This is terrible if you ask me, and now we will see more elbows and cuts to further stagnation in the upper part of the land to only one elbow. We need the yellow card rule and judge PRIDE style make the best fights I feel. I would be happier with her elbows rules added to PRIDE PRIDE rules removed and UFC rules in place. Soccer kicks and steps to make the fight much more dynamic and open, I think.

Fortunately, there are still Pancrase and are a premier company with high standards and excellent judging criteria. If at all The world wants unified rules, Pancrase rules would be a good option.

SW: In Pride, you can wear shoes or combat judo gi. What do you think the elimination of this art UFC optional?

JB: Not being able to have a fight or shoes Dogi is silly!

SW: How about the first round of 10 minutes and after rounds in the structure of 5 minutes?

JB: I like the round of 10 minutes, but more important is the pride judging system. I think covers the combat as a whole better than the current U.S. system do.

SW: During the interviews held by the CFU leadership in Japan a "Barnett vs Arlovski "fight was mentioned as a dream card. What do you think?

JB: Why? In my opinion, most interesting people for me to fight a former UFC champion in a weak division. I prefer to make a rematch with Randy Couture, despite already beat him. It should not be belt either.

I think a Dream Match for me is maybe Volk Han Alexander Karelin. Of course, these are really "what if" matches, but I think the fans love them.

If the "U" was still around I'd like a rematch with Tamura-san and for traditional knowledge of retirement for one match. It would be amazing!

SW: How do you match against heavyweight champion of the UFC?

JB: I would say I'm better.

SW: Who are you going to fight with and that the ring (or Octagon) in the future?

JB: At this time is unknown. But I hope to fight whoever is champion and give a beautiful fight the whole world watching. I am an American and support America, but I will carry Japan in the ring and give a strong supporter of Japan as well.
