Have you traveled to Peru? Any suggestions on what to do and not do? Things we need to know before going?
*We’re traveling on LAN Airlines…..to and fro”
Thank you!
Hello. I’m from Peru, so I hope I can help you.
Depending on what kind of tourist you are, there are different things you can do. Check: www.peru.info
I’ll try to sumarize. These are the main places:
In Lima, you could spend 2 or 4 days. There are different things to do, but it’s basically a City Tour. Go to Miraflores, Barranco and the Plaza Mayor. What you should definetely do is tasting peruvian food (sincerely, the best of the world). Cebiche, aji de gallina and papa a la huancaina are dishes you’ll love. These places are extremely good: La Mar (seafood) and Jose Antonio or Señorio de Sulco(Peruvian cuisine). If you want to spend more money, go to La Rosa Nautica or Astrig & Gaston. It’s more expensive, but worth it.
Then, Arequipa is a stone made city. It doesn’t have big buildings. It’s called the white city because of the volcanic stones they used to build their houses. Good food and you could go to the Colca Canyon where you can watch condors flying so close to you (it’s amazing and not dangerous).
Puno has the beautiful Titicaca Lake (the highest navigable lake in the World) and those islands you mentioned.
Cuzco has many places to go: most importantly, Machu Picchu, but also Sacsayhuaman, Ollantaytambo, Pisaq, the Sacred Valley. You can find tour companies since you get there. There are people since you arrive either from the Airport or the bus, so they can help you to choose where to go.
These are the main culture destinations here. If you like adventure or nature, there are other places. Check the website (is available in English)
Some tips:
- TAXIS are never more expensive than 12 soles ($ 4). When you take a taxi they’ll notice you are not from Peru and sometimes they will try to take advantage of it. The only taxi that could be $10 or $15 is the first one you take from the airport to your hotel (I recommend you to hire it inside the airport.
- Don’t drink the water from the faucet.
- Always ask if the food is spicy, so they can regulate that to the point you like: spicy, just a little bit, not at all.
- You’ll have to pay taxes when you are returning to your country: $28, so save some money if you don’t want to stay here forever.
Hope you come and have a wonderful time. This is the official tourism website again: www.peru.info
