Peru recently surpassed Venezuela as a member of 3rd largest Canadian trade in America America (behind Mexico and Brazil), mainly due to strong growth in exports of Peruvian gold. The strong increase in imports from Peru is due to increased of mineral prices and increased production in Canada's gold mines in Peru. Gold and other precious metals accounted for 53.4 percent of imports Canada to Peru. Other leaders include imports of copper and related products, zinc, lead and other ores and concentrates. Canadian exports to Peru rose 9.5 percent to 289 million Canadian dollars in 2006. Peru and Canada could start talks on a bilateral free trade agreement as early as February 2008.
