Volunteer Inca Project in Peru to participate in the restoration of the Church and the Inca Excavations

Zurite volunteers, the basis for our projects Inca, will participate in two important and interesting projects. The restoration of the beautiful 17th century church in the village square, while recently initiated an excavation the original village site starting mid-May.

The restoration of the Church of San Nicolas de Bari.
The Andean people of Zurite, like many peoples Peru of its kind, found his church as the cornerstone of the community. This beautiful church, built after the arrival of the Spanish "conquistadores" has largely fallen into disrepair. Important both as a local facility as a potential tourist attraction, the National Institute of Culture (INC) and teaching and overseas projects are working together to restore. The INC is the government agency that deals with historical ruins and buildings in Peru – Similar to Heritage English. Their experts are assisting and guiding the volunteer projects abroad in discovery, cleaning and maintenance of the altars, statues and paintings detailed murals and frescos decorating the walls. The volunteers are learning the skills and techniques in conservation and restoration work to a deadline December that the church will once again be the focal point for the glorious day of the annual festival of Zurite.

Excavation in Tambo Tennis
Following the success last year, the volunteer projects abroad will once again be assisting with the excavation in Tambo Cancha: the original site of the village of Zurite. Work with local archaeologists since mid-May, the volunteers hope to discover more objects, trinkets and secrets of this unusual site. Unlike most Inca peoples set out in a grid style, Tambo Cancha is shaped like a "Tumi" or ceremonial knives, with houses on only 3 sides. Some Room uncovered last year were in the form of the Andean cross or "Chacana" the most sacred symbol and powerful Inca. For two months the volunteers will be involved with the dig, learning techniques including how to preserve, catalog and label the findings. More importantly, projects abroad will help to discover why the people of Zurite was so important to the Inca empire.
