If I study abroad in Chile, will they have a hard time pronouncing my name (it has a ~th sound in it)?
When I traveled in Peru and Ecuador, whenever I introduced myself I always had to spend about 5 minutes to explain the ~th sound in my name (only when I knew that I would be hanging out or traveling with the person for a couple days… I’m not that pedantic that I did it with everyone I met.) Anyways, there is no way for me to shorten my name to not have the ~th… so… idk.
I’ve been to Chile a few times….wonderful country. They’re all very nice and quite understanding that it is difficult for them to pronounce some of our names. I went with a friend, Jackie, and it was nearly impossible for them to say it any other way than Yakie. But, on the same end, I can not say Pedro properly to save my life (This was the owner of the home I was staying in), and nobody seemed to care.
Chileans are a very laid back kind of people. If they can’t say your name, don’t worry about it. Either they will make up a nickname for you (Lola is quite a popular nickname down there, meaning something to the effect of “young girl”), or you will get used to the way it sounds when they pronounce it incorrectly.
And…since I don’t know what you name is exactly…it’s also quite possible they will have no trouble at all!
Good luck, have lots of fun, and try to see Vina Del Mar and La Serena. They are gorgeous!
