Which would you choose … Salkantay Inca Trail or road?

Hi all, I to peru in december. I am excited to finally see Machu Picchu! Just do not know who travels to the town is better … The Inca Trail is replaced by tourists and expensive, and I would have a more vigorous hike, but it is the classic way with all the classic goodies. Salkantay Route no sights to see in the Inca Trail, but not many people doing it, which is less expensive, and I like their level of difficulty. Salkantay, sure. The Inca Trail is full of people and dirty.
