To apply for the Peace corps do you have to be 18 at the time that you apply or 18 when you will leave?

I am 17 years old and I will be a senior in highschool next year except instead of attending my regular school I will be attending a high school in switzerland as a foreign exchange student.I will be submitting college applications next year and I also would like to subit a peace corps application along with them because if I got accepted to the peace corps I would go because I feel that is what I really want to do at this time in my life.I dont want to wait and then get distracted with everything that life throws me after college-I want to do it before college.I really want to go to Peru, Nimibia or Benin. I dont know if I would get accepted considering I dont have a college degree or any work experience but I have the experience of my year abroad which has made me a stronger and more intelligent young woman.I really want to go and Im very determined and I am able to follow directions very well and adapt to new things.Do you think that I am old enough to apply and would be accepted?

You have to be 18 when you would be accepted, but, harsh as it sounds, what developing country would ask for a bright young person with no skills? They have plenty of their own. They want bright young people WITH skills, skills that those BYP can, in turn, teach to the host country’s BYP – whether it is outboard motor repair, bee keeping, accounting, running a small business or high-school biology.

The Peace Corps will take 18-year olds, but they have done things like led the county 4-H program for 6 years or worked on their family farm for 12. 95% of all PCV’s have a degree. The rest have 5 – 30 years of experience in something a host country wants to learn. If you haven’t worked 20 hours a week at something since you were 13, chances of getting an invitation when you are 18 are slim.

Hold fast to your dreams, keep your idealism, go to college and study something you can then in turn teach to people who haven’t had your opportunities.
