I had the opportunity to go fishing on Lake Gatun in Panama recently. Located in the channel, and in fact, jeopardize much of the natural section of the Panama Canal, Gatun Lake is a tropical paradise. Rich in wildlife, its beauty and seemingly untouched waterways and islands are in stark contrast to cargo ships, The car carries, military and Panamax destroyers are cruising through the channel. It was overcast when we arrived at the pier of Chartres on board our 15 foot, 25-horsepower boat. Our captain was a Panamanian who told us 15 years had been a pattern in Gatun, for four years and knew the lake and out. The first hour was mainly in tourism, due in main part of the lack of power out of the two times flooded back hanging. Exit from the water at 7 am we got a great feeling take all day before us and no one objected when our captain Daniel stopped at Monkey Island and we feed the spider monkeys.

Gatun Lake is filled with one of the best in the sport of bass fishing lake in the world, the peacock bass. Known in South America for their struggle and their size, especially in the Amazon, the peacock bass is a non-native fish introduced to Panama. For this reason, there is no limit to the number you can get the lake. From the U.S. and use the limits and permissions, this was like shooting ducks in a barrel. Danny told us that the week before he and his father had retired at 75 in less than two hours.

We reached our first fishing hole and prepared. We bought 200 small fish for $ 16 at the pier and I was excited to use live bait. With three poles in the water which led less than 3 minutes before we had two guards on the boat. This continued as he moved up and down one of the fingers extend from the main channel of the Canal. On the way we saw toucans, turtles, monkeys, alligators, crocodiles and two full-sized, quickly dissuaded us from taking that much needed swim.

With a full bar and plenty of bait fished all morning, pulling in about 13 fish an hour, or about one every five minutes. Just finished throwing back three, most were in the range of 1.2 pounds and, although not the fighters who had heard of the Amazon, the amount of fish caught a bit ago in size. Definitely quantity over quality, but by the time we have had back more than 40 pounds of bass. For ten cents a fish, fillets Danny in the dock in the rain and by the time we got home we were ready for a party.

Final thoughts on the trip: If you ever have the opportunity, go fishing on Lake Gatun in Panama. We paid $ 70 for the boat in the morning, no limits, no permits, fish great flavor and good times everything. There is plenty to see and plenty to do in the channel, a fishing trip of a lifetime.
