Salmonsdam Nature Reserve, run by Cape Nature, is a small nature reserve, not far from Stanford in the Western Cape in South Africa. There are three hiking trails available.
The longest is a mountain trail at the foot of the mountain Perdeberg and the top that says there a view of Walker Bay (that's for sure, as you can see Walker Bay from virtually anywhere on the reservation), and the cities of La Calera and Bredasdorp. The second trail is 4 miles to Camino Barranco Keeromskloof through and through small patches of indigenous forest. The final path is the path of the waterfall about 3 miles through thick fynbos to the falls and back. The three routes are short links for experienced hikers and adjustment could address all three in a day.
Too heavy as 62 years old with a severe diet that includes at least one hour on foot or biokinetics the day, the most logical done after 10 weeks of the scheme was to do some hiking, so we started a beautiful Saturday morning Salmonsdam.
We part of the cliff path, but turned to where it joins the mountain path. The piece we did do was pretty easy, but the next stage looked pretty difficult, though probably not at all difficult for experienced hikers. The fact that the hiking trails are not listed Salmonsdam largely trails and related sites confirms this assumption. I think if I had a cane I would have gone further. So we must come back sometime.
There are facilities very basic Salmonsdam Nature Reserve and camp for the night including a few small chalet. There is a sanitary block and 10 camping sites.
Around the southeast edge of the reserve is a mountain "unity" that leads so far in the Perdeberg and meets the mountain road he hoped to be able lead to the top in a regular motor vehicle (a Mercedes C class), but it seems to. that only vehicles LUV 4X2 4X4 or even be able to reach the summit with any ease.
Flora and fauna is varied and the reserve is a good example of a mountain basin area. We spent all morning in the reserve and enjoyed the experience. Often used as a training center for school children because of the area of influence is so visible. Baboons and other small mammals are often seen in reserve. We have seen signs of baboons party Protea freshly opened flowers and flowers of Protea flowers that beneath the surface.
Salmonsdam was named in honor of Captain Robert Salmond of the HMS Birkenhead which sank just a few miles from Salmonsdam on February 26, 1852, when about 450 sailors and soldiers were killed. that the tragic event was the now-famous call of "Women and children first" and the "Birkenhead Drill"
