What traditional icons of Britain actually originated abroad?
I’m doing a project on British identity, and I’ve found that many of the things that we take as typically British are in fact from different countries.
Tea is originally from China
Haggis is (maybe) originally from Scandinavia
A Saturday night Kebab is quite British
Bangers (sausages originally from what is now known as Iraq)
and Mash (potatoes originally from Peru)
The “English Rose” originated in Central Asia and spread across the northern hemisphere.
Does anyone have any more examples?
Snooker originated in India, as did bungalows.
