Monte Sano State Park is a popular recreation destination near Huntsville, Alabama. The park covers 2,100 hectares over the top of Monte Sano mountain, just east of the city. Visitors can enjoy a variety of outdoor recreational activities and a visit to the planetarium and observatory located within the park.
The 1,600 meters high Monte Sano Mountain is popular with visitors since the 1820's. Monte Sano, which means "mountain of health" in Spanish, was once home to a resort hotel and sanatorium. A railroad that runs from downtown Huntsville on Monte Sano Hotel provides easy access for visitors. Today a Rails-to-Trails Conservancy trail project preserves what remains of the old railroad bed. The original park facilities were built in the 1930's by the Body Civilian Conservation (CCC), including stone cottages with fireplaces that can be rented at present. The original park lodge built by the CCC was destroyed by fire in 1947 but was rebuilt in 2002. The lodge is available for rental events.
Monte Sano State Park offers over 14 miles of trails to explore. North and South Plateau are easier Hiking trails that allow spectacular views of the Tennessee River Valley. The McKay Hollow and fog covered mountain trails more difficult terrain and offer glimpses of some of the wildlife that lives in the mountains as deer and wild goats.
There are two campgrounds in the park. The campers at the camp can best utilize water, electricity and sewer connections. There is also a primitive camping for those who prefer a more rustic. Other amenities of the park includes a picnic area, playground, and a camp store.
Perhaps the most unusual feature of Monte Sano State Park (Vbase) Von Braun Astronomical Society Planetarium, located near the park entrance. The Vbase is a voluntary non-profit made by amateurs and professional astronomers. The planetarium is open to the public every Saturday at 7:30 pm for a program. The current program is "Exploration of Saturn." Ticket prices are $ 5 for adults and $ 3 for students. Children under 6 are free. After the program, visitors can see the night sky through one of society's telescopes, weather permitting.
Monte Sano State Park is a great place to visit at any time of year. native azaleas provide color in spring, the leaves are spectacular in the fall, and the views are panoramic views all year round. The park is located at 5105 Nolen Avenue in Huntsville. Hour usage is from 7 am until sunset. Park admission is $ 2 from Monday to Friday and $ 3 weekends. No charge for children 5 years and minors. Visits to northern Alabama are sure to enjoy what this popular park has to offer.
