Charles Darwin: 170th anniversary of his Galapagos Cruises and Tours Visit

September 7, 1835: HMS Beagle set sail from Callao, Peru, to the Islands Galapagos Archipelago. About eight days later, ss or in the distance, the island of San Cristobal had a high volcanic peak as proof of arrival. They young Englishman had reached one of the most Earth wilderness areas: the Galapagos Islands. During a period of five weeks, the HMS Beagle sailing in the waters of Galapagos under the command of Captain Robert Fitzroy. Their mission: to survey isolated places hardly visited by navigators. This list of sites includes Cape Horn, Australia and New Zealand, Galapagos, Tahiti, and more.

Young Charles Darwin spent just two weeks on the ground, and it was enough time to take a look what is natural selection. Little is known, it would take nearly 25 years after visiting the Galapagos, to publish the book The Origin of Species. Scientific thinking would change forever, as Darwinian principles now dominate virtually every field of study.

Our boats decided to take part in this celebration, and 170 years later, our Galapagos Naturalists during briefings included a small excerpt from the visit of s C. Darwin to the islands, matching that particular day.

Upon landing on September 15, 1835 … HMS Beagle reached Hood Island, today. Early in the morning Edward Chaffers (master) and Arthur Mellersh (midshipman) contained in a boat to examine the island's coast. At noon another boat was launched to study the central islands of the archipelago. In afternoon of HMS Beagle reached Chatham Island. Darwin was intrigued by the black lava rocky coast, and the raw hostile environment of the island.

Today, our guests the opportunity to learn more knowledge about Charles Darwin. It is clear that our intention is to share a very important issue with our visitors, that history together, amazement and discovery.

The HMS Beagle set sail from Galapagos after sunset glooming October 20, 1835. On board our ships, our Personal Expedition completely covered during September and October so the visit of Charles Darwin to the Galapagos must have been, back in 1835.

Certainly this is an anniversary that commemorates the journey that led Darwin to what was later to become the greatest source of inspiration, and the evidence for evolution.
