U.S. 94 (italy vs. Norway)
We lost but not out! We were Italy, after all and we were not going to resign after of only one defeat, especially since he had already won three World Cups, has been in the finals four times and semifinalists were six times. Our record demanded go out and show what they were capable of, what I knew and was established in my mind that I got back and enjoy the rest of the world cup before the game second in Italy.
The other games are very good and although there were no big surprises, I got to see a very nice piece of Argentina, who beat Greece 4-0, but this could be more or expected. They with Maradona, who was back in shape after a year and a half suspension of cocaine, but that was already in the past. Marardona, was still young at 33 or relatively well their skills and ball handling even better if even he had fallen a step or two, but then again the speed had never been his greatest asset as a player. Of course, Argentina also had Batistuta, who scored three goals for Argentina in their 4-0 defeat of Greece, while the fourth goal was scored by Maradona, himself and each time the camera captures his passion after his first goal for the World Cup and he scored against Belgium in Mexico 86. It was almost as if he scored that goal only to prove to himself and his critics that he was not finished as far as football is concerned and in a way that was strange because the way he looked at the camera be more remembered then the goal itself.
As for other games, Brazil had won 2-0, but had not really impressed by beating Russia, which played as such for the first time after having been the Soviet Union for so long. States United in their second match defeated Colombia 2-1 in a match that might have been forgotten if not for the tragedy that occurred later. Andres Escobar scored an own goal for the United States because it was killed on his return to Colombia, one of the cartels, which obviously had bet heavily on on Colombia. This most likely the case but I believe one of the Colombian cartels, even bet heavily against Colombia. All this must have created considerable confusion in the selection of Colombia, and even threatened some players before games do everything possible, while others to win at all costs.
In a way I also felt sorry for the U.S., because they were playing in a world cup, which is the highest honor that can be given to a national team and they were by host country and yet most Americans seem either oblivious to their efforts, or simply did not care. U.S. had played well against Switzerland in their 1-1 draw. This team that qualified the head of Italy in their group and although this was history, but drew 2-2 against Brazil, in the 1950 World Cup that Brazil hosted. Switzerland, would go even two years later with basically the same team to hold England to a 1 all draw in the 96 euros host that England was playing. The U.S., after drawing with Switzerland even beat Colombia, which some have predicted that Argentina's break to go 5-0 all the way and yet, the people of the United States not only seemed to take pride in their achievements teams, it was like just do not want to deal with it. For my part, remember even reading about the wild celebrations in countries like Austria, Peru, Argentina, Italy, Germany after World Cup victories while in the states almost no reaction.
All of which made me feel bad for the Americans on that team, which would be the first American team to qualify for the second round from which he had done in every world cup the first time, played in Uruguay in 1930. Also, being an American then scored the first ever hat trick in the competition against Belgium in a 3-0 U.S. victory leading to the United States became the first CONCACAF team and only (So far) to reach a semifinal of the World Cup.
My compassion for the American players was largely due to the fact that these players really seemed to be giving all this, his big moment. However, everything seemed to be for a nation that was not even aware or even want to be. I can even add that when the U.S. played Brazil in the round of 16 in Los Angeles was that Brazilian fans clearly outnumbered American fans and if you did not know the U.S. was playing at home, one could have sworn it was the opposite. For such was the lack of U.S. support was home.
Of course, his achievements were in the news of the major networks, but even they were given less time then other sports commentators that anyone who knew anything about football ("soccer") might say that they had no idea what the game was on the verge of reporting and would have done better to stay with baseball. Of course, for me, I feel that the networks have at least tried to make people who either play the game of football commentators to better educate they had, not to seem too ignorant about what they were reporting. In reality, what ended up causing a stir was the way, stations in Latin America shouted one goal scored, which in fact is a practice that is carried out through the entire football world.
In all this however, there was no One thing I realized while watching the games and is it that the following changes had taken place in the rules:
1 – A player only in the sides if he was in front of the defense, on the same line and did not mean he was out on the sides, which is expected to increase the score.
2 – Almost any series won foul the offending player a card of intent no matter the time or had not occurred to commit harm.
3 – Any deliberate handball received a card.
4 – Deliberate again passed the porter and were not allowed and were punished with an indirect free kick at the place where goalkeeper had touched the ball.
5 – Any last player committing a foul to stop a player has an automatic red card.
6 – Yellow cards in the first round, were no longer counted in the latter stages of the tournament.
7 – The players had to use their names on their shirts, along with their numbers. This even causing a joke with the players from Cameroon, who were forced to add their names on their shirts on the scoreboard.
8 – Three We studied a victory, unlike what until then had only been two, but I for one do not see (and still do) how to make a big difference when teams are playing only three games.
But the day came and again the match was to the Port Authority bus terminal itself only now the mood among the faithful was more somber Italian, we had to win and had to or face elimination. Norway would not be easy, but when I looked around I saw everyone was more serious then the game had been against Ireland. Another thing I noticed was that the Italian fans clearly outnumbered the Norwegians, perhaps up to 4-1, but this did not mean that we would win for it to do. Our name alone would not do it, as teams were no longer afraid, but felt they could win.
I remember having a job much better on that day, then that was against Ireland. This is because tickets were so hard to find, which allowed for me to sit more or less midfield, while before you get to sit behind one of the goals, where I managed to get a great view of Houghton win the game in Ireland. Italy was more concentrated in this day and can not be denied that, as even during the national anthems could feel his focus on the case. As for me, I had come ready to support Italy as I could and again wearing the blue shirt of the Italian.
The game began like any another, to attack Italy and the white score when again, as in his first game in Argentina 78 made history for all the wrong reasons! In Argentina, was to resign to the fastest goal in the history of world cup, now it was for being the first team to have their goalkeeper (Pagliuca) is shown the red card during a match of the cup the world. Yes, Italy was reduced to ten men, which meant it would have to make their goalkeeper and have a player off the field. Roberto Baggio, to my great surprise was chosen to go outside, so basically we were down to ten men, without our best player and a game we had to win against a team that had eliminated England in qualifying. Could things get worse?
This I wondered, as did many fans angry. One I even heard something and got angry with me, and when I mentioned to someone at my side Pagliuca had handled the ball outside the area, to be told that the ball had actually hit him in the chest, but regardless of which he was expelled. Marchegiani was forced to take its place. The porter who had literally two goals against Switzerland, which was clearly his fault, was to be our starting goalie, not only for the rest of this game, but the next. Could things be worse? Could, Baresi, our captain had to leave because of injury and later that week that require surgery.
Yet however The first half ended 0-0 with the fans, "Italy Fratelli D '" is still waiting to win. The second half started and optimism, despite everything was high and did not take long for the long-awaited cry of "META" to break out of our lungs as Dino Baggio, the mark of 67 minutes to put us ahead stay. All this creates a scenario, I will never forget, people hugging, some jumping up and down with flags, men and women who mattered were not for winning. One to zero, which would end our hopes and living in branding, of course we would probably have to beat Mexico or at least a draw and hope to go as a third-place teams, but that was within our reach and this was cause enough for celebration.
Celebrate, we did but it was more relief then everything else that we had won at least one game and scored that made us feel good afterwards. It had been a costly victory losing both Baresi and Pagliuca but there won and that was important. As for the other party in our group had defeated Mexico 2-1 Ireland, which meant that the points on the square in the group on three points the four teams. All of which puts more emphasis on our last game against Mexico.
