Multiculturalism is nothing but multiple cultures living in the same society in an organized manner. People from different countries, ethnic, traditions and backgrounds live and work together. This amazing feature is an important part of American society.
Many people from different countries began to immigrate to U.S. 19 century. However, multiculturalism began in the U.S. in the 1950's when the Civil Rights Movement started. This movement played a crucial role highlight issues such as inequality, discrimination and oppression. People began to put pressure not only on government, but also in institutions treated as social equals. Figures such as George Washington Carver, William James and Charles H. Wesley were responsible for promoting multiculturalism in the U.S.. Everybody believed in the life in a pluralistic society that everyone at the same time and treated as equals.
U.S. has always allowed people with pride the freedom to practice their own religion and express their thoughts. Regardless of culture, people are allowed equal opportunities. Today, U.S. has a large number of Hispanics and Asians living there, and that an egalitarian society, people must be willing to accept multiculturalism as part of their society.
The group of more rapid growth in the U.S. is that Asian-Americans and Hispanics. The Federal government has strict laws to promote a society of equals and as a result of so many different cultures living in one place, America has truly become a melting pot of cultures. Minorities, Native Americans, African Americans and immigrants from all over the world live in harmony together to forge a deeper bond.
As an aspect of American society has had an effect deep. There is a demand in all areas that people from all walks of life should be able to enjoy equal rights. Therefore, the different communities and intellectuals joined the demand for rights for oppressed groups such as lesbians, gays, the oppressed and the elderly.
In the education sector, discrimination is not permitted and children of all ethnicities and cultures are allowed to enter any educational institution. Even commercial and industrial sectors, people are given the rights to equal participation, regardless of their background.
While there are some disadvantages to multiculturalism, advantage is that you must always concentrate. A society should not discourage absorb people from different backgrounds.
