Is it necessary to take antimalarial if I am visiting Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu in Peru?
I am planning a trip to Peru in February and I visit 3 places Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu. I keep hearing different advice about whether or not to take antimalarial drugs. Perhaps it also depends on the time of year.
No, you do not need malaria. Lima can get the humidity and haze looks good from the top of the cliffs of Miraflores, but is moist and fresh, not Mossie country. Machu Picchu and Cuzco are 11-12 000 feet up. The thousand-foot difference makes a difference when going back and forth in time by train from Cusco to Aguas Callientes below Machu Picchu. It is well above where the mosquitoes fly in the Andean highlands. A great place to stay after Lima, aclimatise before going to Cusco, Arequipa is about 75oo feet. Has the city most beautiful place I've ever seen (been in Venice, Rome, Trieste, Vienna, all those things), a fabulous monastery so big it has the name in the streets, the huge Misti Volcano and Colca Canyon, where condors fly incredible, a bus ride away. Fly from Lima, then fly from Arequipa to Cusco, which is the best and most exhilirating flight I've done.
