Have you ever bothered reading about quinoa history? Well maybe now is the perfect time to find out about your favorite super food. Quinoa (pronounced as keen-wa) has been cultivated for more than 5000 years now in the Andes Mountains of South America. The grain like seed was a staple of the Incan diet in countries like Peru, Bolivia and Chile. Quinoa is so sacred for the Incans that they broke the ground with a golden tipped shovel at its first planting to show respect. This grain is also part of their religious ceremonies.
The Incans refer to it as the “Mother of all Grains” and if you will read about quinoa history, the Inca emperor is the one who traditionally sow the first seeds of the season using golden implements no wonder a lot of people call quinoa as the golden grain.
When the Europeans conquered South America, quinoa was scorned by the Spanish colonists as food for Indians. It was suppressed because of it status within indigenous non-Christian ceremonies or rituals and Incas were forced to grow corn instead. Can you believe how rich quinoa history is?
Sometime in the 1980s, this wonderful grain like seed made its way north of the Equator to the United States and Canada and has grown in popularity since then. The delicious and nutty seed has become a healthier alternative to rice, pasta and other grains. Quinoa has evolved and it now comes in different colors like ivory white, red and black.
Did you know that it wasn’t only consumed as a food but a beverage similar to beer was created from the seeds? The water that is used to soak the seed was also utilized as a detergent and topical antiseptic..
