Garhwal Himalayas, the highest mountain range of the world, has some of the most spectacular lakes, glaciers, forests and wildlife. The high mountains green valleys, alpine forests and rivers that flows have inspired many artists and a poet. It is a land of many streams and the birthplace of some of the largest rivers in the India.
The Himalayas blessed with gushing rivers, majestic snow clad peaks and a wealth of flora and fauna, is described as the abode of "the Gods". Garhwal is a mecca for devotees and a haven for adventure sports like rafting, camping, hiking and skiing. The holy places of Badrinath and Gangotri are here and so is the birth of the most revered river – Ganga. The legendary valleys of Garhwal abound with stunning natural beauty.
Garhwal district includes of Uttarkashi, Tehri, Pauri, Chamoli and Dehradun. Garhwal hills are a paradise for hikers. Nature is in his element here, and trekking trails are recognized by the great beauty of his opinions, surprisingly different every time. There are some excellent opportunities for trekking in the vicinity of places of pilgrimage important as Badrinath, Yamunotri, Kedarnath, Hemkund Gangotri and near the Valley of Flowers.
Best Season: Although Garhwal is a pleasure all year round, except the rainy season, it is advisable to plan travel trek to this region during April to November. Trekking in the Garhwal hills is the best between the months of May and October.
Permits: Nationals of India need no permission for trekking in an area outside the inner line. For routes within the interior line, the authorization of the local district judge or the central Interior Ministry is required in advance. For foreigners, crossing the line inside not allowed.
Upto 4,900 m Trekking need no permission and can be performed with tourist visas. Above 4,900 m, hiking also can be done with the prior approval of the IMF, provided that no peak is attempted. House Permits are also needed.
DRIVING
The closest airport is Grant in Dehradun Jolly. However, the flights are not very regular. Convenient overnight trains connect New Delhi Haridwar, railway chief Garhwal near. The Shatabdi Express serves Haridwar, along with the trains of Mumbai and Calcutta. For many of the walks, Rishikesh serves as the base. Bus services connecting the Garhwal region with other cities in northern India.
