Our avid tourists, led by Peru, decides to put as much as possible in your travel agenda. Fly to Lima at sea level catches a connecting flight to Cusco, jumping up to 3400m in an hour. He has a headache when he wakes up in his hotel the next morning, but no time to lose. Without delay their belts walking boots and out on the Inca Trail, a route that leads up to 4200 m, sometimes on the way to Machu Picchu. Not feeling too good hiking group reaches the first step high, in fact, can not even find the strength to lift his feet. Sinking to his knees with his head throbbing forehead veins and pons, BOOOOOM! His head explodes like a balloon filled with jelly.

OK, that last not happened. However, being aware of the effects of altitude can make the difference between the trip of a lifetime and a nasty fight.

What causes altitude sickness?
Unfortunately, the power of modern medical research can not yet fully determine the causes of altitude sickness. However, it is generally believed that reducing the density of oxygen at higher altitudes means that the body can not get supply needs and proceeds to let him know about it.

People can be affected in a range of different heights, but about 80% of people feel may affect about 3,000 m above sea level. While many will be inclined to be in the minority of 20% and expects to start pink foam begins to flow your mouth when you walk down a hill by the sea, the effects (if they feel or not) can be easily avoided and simple to use.

The first (and last luck) Step – Prevention
The first thing is to check the altitude of the region to which you are traveling and ask your travel company for advice expert. Make sure the tour operator you choose is honest and responsible with regard to altitude. Your itinerary should not try to include too many drastic changes altitude in a short time and you should always leave a couple of days to acclimatize before starting the trekking over 3000m. responsible travel companies try to plan your trip an increase gradual elevation where possible, for example in Peru would be the optimal route Lima, Nazca, Arequipa, Cusco, Puno. This may not be possible due to time constraints, but your travel consultant will do everything possible.

In any case, if you are not above 2000m altitude is very unlikely. The ascent rate is the factor More importantly, starting up as slowly as possible reduces the risk. As mentioned before it also helps to take it easy for at least a couple of days after making the climb to altitude before launching yourself into anything too strenuous. More heavy breathing in the thinner air also causes dehydration, so drinking plenty of water and stay away from alcohol-filled nights as you will avoid major problems.

What to do if you become ill
The Prevention is obviously the best measure. However, if you can get any of these symptoms above 2400m, including;

  • poor appetite
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • fatigue
  • dizziness
  • insomnia
  • pins and needles
  • shortness of breath upon exertion
  • Persistent rapid pulse
  • drowsiness
  • swelling of the hands, feet and face

Any of these could indicate that you are experiencing altitude sickness. Rest and drinking water are the best way back to the same height (Chewing coca leaves or drinking coca tea is also available as a remedy well known), but if things get unbearable, the descent is the only option. Painkillers will not solve the problem and victims should definitely not make a bid for the heights.

Do not let the fear of possible effects height of clouds your adventures, remember that wherever you go in the Andes, where you take things as constant must have the time of his life.
