Is Peru a friendly place for family vacation?

I have a friend who went to Peru and climbed to Machu Pichu. The photos were gorgeous. I just want a visitor's opinion as to whether this is a good place for family holidays. I have a year of 4 years and 1 year old. I realize Machu Picchu might be a bit much for them, but there are nice places sandy beaches for a family of 4 to relax?

To help a bit Peru has a a lot of nice places to go to Machu Pichu, although the man would be too much for young children. There are plenty of excellent beaches to visit out there.
