My children (one teenager and one young) want to spend a month this summer in Peru and Bolivia. Should I worry?
I would really appreciate any info of people who are or have been there for me to get a better idea. My two children speak English, some French speaking and the other a little Spanish.
Peru should be no problem. Most people understand some English and, of course, everyone understands Spanish. French, however, is totally useless in the region. In Peru, while in the cities, and the U.S.. Stay away from neighborhoods and mind of things when you're wrong in tourist areas (Pickpockets love tourists.) If you go from one city to another by the bust, good selection of bus lines, as Ormerod and Southern Cross (the others tend to pick up people on the road and smetimes, these people tend to be thieves). If you are going to fly, remind them to keep some money on airport charges Peru is not included in the ticket. When in Lima, I tell them to visit Larco Mar (I know it is full of tourists, but the view is worth it). Moreover, tell them to visit the center (Plaza de Armas). See the changing of the guard at about noon and visit the cathedral and the church of San Francisco. If you have lunch there, they I say eat T'anta (right behind the building of the municipality). You should also try to visit Pachacamac. In Cuzco, along with the usual and Machu Sacsahuamán Picchu (by the way, I tell them to try to buy your train ticket to Machu Picchu on the Internet and that is the main bottleneck in the trip. I am attaching the website), tell not to lose Coricancha (Inca Temple of the Sun) and the church of San Blas. Bolivia is another matter. There is an ongoing dispute between the current president of Bolivia (Evo Morales, a coca grower of age) and the eastern provinces of the country (mainly Santa Cruz de la Sierra). Currently, the president has banned the export of soybean oil out of Bolivia. Soy is grown in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, so it is obviously a policy designed to affect the "unfriendly" province. over time this will boil and explode, SAIC has already done in the recent past, it would be careful. If they do go to Bolivia, you have to visit the "Home of the Sun", which is a remainder of the Tiwanaku culture (Before the Incas). Beware of altitude sickness in La Paz (which is about 4,000 meters above sea level or about 13,200 feet above sea level). Hope this helps.
