The mystery of the Nazca Lines include the most significant group of geoglyphs in the world show great lines of 70 animals, insects and humans, with hundreds of lines and geometric patterns carved into the desert floor.
Located between the towns of Nazca and Palpa, Nazca lines cover a plateau through 53 miles. Some of the figures measure 900 feet wide. This extraordinary legacy was created by the Nazca culture between 200 BC to 700 AD. The Nazca Lines can only be seen from above, and consequently found a plane in flight in 1927. The lines are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the attractions Most popular in Peru.
The Nazca desert maintains a temperature of about 25 a ° C (77 bis ° F) throughout the year, making one of the driest deserts on Earth. His lack of wind helped to keep their lines of hummingbirds, spiders, monkeys, alligators, sharks and other figures found until now.
Nazca Culture
To the south of the Nazca Lines archaeologists are discovering the ancient city of possessing tracks Cahuachi mysterious Nazca Lines. This was an important ceremonial center of the Nazca culture with several large adobe pyramids, some with views of the majority of lines Nazca.
The culture also built an impressive system of underground aqueducts that still work today. The aqueduct was essential Cantalloc to the Nazca culture and helped them survive.
Cahuachi was used as a ceremonial center that hosted the rituals related to agriculture, fertility and water. For unknown reasons Cahuachi building abruptly stopped, and the city was abandoned. Popular theory suggests that the collapse of the center was a result of deteriorating the environment or the Pan American droughts of the Andes.
Theories of Nazca Lines Mystery
Maria Reiche was a German mathematician and archaeologist who investigated the Nazca Lines for decades. She developed the theory that the culture of the Nazca Lines to be built used as a sun calendar and an astronomical observatory cycles, making it the largest astronomy book in the world. This is the most accepted theory today although there are many other theories that attempt to explain this complex mystery.
The Nazca lines might be the magic line that originated in the cult of Chavin cat. Some say that the lines are of sacred geometry. Nazca figures could be indicators of groundwater flow. Perhaps the Nazca Lines were drawn by the priests or shamans to be used as an astrological calendar and placed in the Nazca Desert, because of their spiritual energy.
Moreover, since the lines themselves can not be radiocarbon dated, there remains the possibility that existed when the Nazca culture emerged.
Because Nazca lines can only be seen entirely from the air, some experts believe that the Nazca culture developed crude methods of flight, as the hot air balloon. It is also argued that the lines were made by extraterrestrials landing strips for UFOs.
The truth is that nobody really knows which were built by the Nazca lines. Maybe someday, as the excavations at Cahuachi continues, evidence was found that may point in one direction firm. Until then, you can fly over the Nazca lines to draw their own conclusions.
Flying over the Nazca Lines
Tours usually begin at the Maria Reiche Nazca airfield in a video on the lines are often observed. The flight over the Nazca Lines is set in a small plane and lasts about 45 minutes to 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Most tours also include a fascinating visit to the cemetery Chauchila where mummies of the Nazca culture can observed in open graves. Due to the dry desert of Nazca, organisms are highly conserved. A visit to the pottery shops are also interesting as it report on the importance of ancient pottery was Nazcans.
