"Why do we have to study English?" When students reluctant this dreaded question, how do we respond? How do you motivate them to really want to learn and use English? Here is an approach I have used successfully.
Often when I give a keynote address or a session academic plenary English teacher training, I ask the audience, "How many countries have Spanish as their first language?" From I live and work in South America, I would say that the response would be swift and forthcoming. Usually not. After the group has sweated for a couple of minutes or so I asked, "Would you like to see the list?" They do, of course, so the key project 20 Spanish speaking countries, namely:

and Guatemala
and Nicaragua
or El Salvador
o Costa Rica
or Panama
or Colombia
o Ecuador
or Peru
or Bolivia
or Chile
and Argentina
or Uruguay

The fun begins
Then the real fun begins. My next question is: "How many countries have English as their mother tongue or official?" To turn the screw a little more I can add, "You go to all teachers of English, so you should know that the language is spoken, right?" They are agree that they should and for the next few minutes were devoted to probe the list L1 English. More squirming, some shouted questions and relieve pressure off. "How do you have in your list of" It's rare that the number exceeds ten or fifteen Take a moment?. How much can you list?

"Would you like to see my list?" I ask. You know what the answer is unanimous. " Do you think that is something that could be useful for an English teacher to know? "A resounding" Yes! "Provided below.
In Indeed, there are at least thirty-five English L1 countries!
Surprised? Most are English teachers. And my current list includes even the all for now.

Why not check out the web sites officials of these countries and other countries in some revealing information on the impact of English in their respective cultures? Many websites include a foreign country news, current local events, radio, audio and video streaming. Need more information? Just "Google" the name of the country to achieve train or two websites.
What is the point
So what's the point? Only it is useful to provide practical aspects of learning English. World travel and trade are just two of the many reasons to be cited by the practicality of English-language learning. Internet emails, chats and forums, all contribute to a preponderance of English-language online use. A lot of English websites resource teacher and a growing number of web sites to learn English language help contribute to the usefulness of the language.

The international press is Online web sites for many it is almost embarrassing to try to keep up with them. Did I also mention the music, radio and entertainment?

How games on line and equipment, fun places to learn and practice grammar and usage, or help in the investigation of a hard-to-find-information-on the theme and podcasts?

Scientific, technical and medical knowledge are published online in English first, although the initial production of knowledge was not in English. Imperialism language? Hegemony? Perhaps, but the reality, however.
So next you the question, "Why do we have to study English? "Not pout, start with some practical aspects motivate their students. It may well be useful to see things in a different light. Learn English can be fun and useful. Help your students see how and can rarely have to deal with the dreaded, "Do we have to study English?"
